What Makes Great Insurance Software in the Age of AI?

“Couldn't somebody just build this themselves?”

We've gotten some version of that question more often lately.

And it's a fair one.

AI is making software faster and less expensive to build. So couldn't an agency—or another software company—just build its own version of OSHAlogs, ModSure, or another Emerge application?

Absolutely. At least, they could build some of the functionality.

But that raises a more interesting question: If software is getting easier for everyone to build, what actually separates great software from everything else?

 

Better tools don't replace expertise

Think of it this way: anyone can buy a hammer or the newest power tools. But owning the same tools as a master craftsman doesn't suddenly make you one.

AI is putting better tools in everyone's hands—including ours. And when everyone gets a better hammer, craftsmanship becomes more important, not less.

Because building great software has never been just about writing code. It's knowing what to build, what not to build, and how to make something people actually want to use.

 

Knowing what to build is the hard part

We're commercial insurance producers who happen to build software—not software developers who decided insurance looked like an interesting market.

That distinction matters.

Could someone build software with similar features? Sure.

But knowing the features isn't the same as understanding the problem.

You also have to understand everything happening around the software. How does a producer introduce it? Why will an employer care? What should happen after you uncover a problem? How does the result fit into prospecting, service, stewardship, underwriting, or renewal?

And sometimes expertise means knowing what not to build. AI makes it easier than ever to add another feature. That doesn't make the feature useful.

The ability to build almost anything makes knowing what deserves to be built even more valuable.

 

The software is only part of the system

Building a great tool doesn't automatically tell a producer which accounts to use it with, how to introduce it to a prospect, or how to turn the results into a valuable client conversation.
